Bill Cunningham New York (2010)
Starting off the new year with a documentary about fashion, this must be a sign of good things to come. This film has been on my “must-see” list for almost a year now, ever since my Art of Cinema professor talked about it. There’s just a charm to this documentary that I really enjoyed. I’m not sure if it was Bill Cunningham’s charisma, or the topic of the film; but it all just worked really well together. My favorite thing about it, and about Bill himself, is that it exemplifies the fact that “fashion” is not just clothing. It’s lifestyle. It’s everything around us. It doesn’t matter what is on the latest runway, or what huge celebrities or socialites are wearing, it’s about what “real” people are doing. This is exactly why I like fashion so much. You don’t need to be in the fashion industry to be “in fashion”. As long as you make a statement, or express your personality through the way you carry yourself, you are “fashion”. I highly recommend this film, especially for my fellow fashion lovers out there.
